Editor, Building Material

Building Material is the journal of the Architectural Association of Ireland. During my tenure as editor the journal’s print and design was re-tendered, and I oversaw its re-design. I was lucky enough to manage an Editorial Committee of seven committed and enthusiastic volunteers: Lisa Cassidy, Miriam Delaney, Kevin Donovan, Louise Dredge, Fiona Hughes, Ben Mullen, Fiona Smyth; the team latterly included Conor McGowan and Ivan O’Connell. Previous to this I was a member of the Building Material’s Editorial Committee from 2006 until 2008.

Building Material 19: Art & Architecture included contributions from artists, architects and academics. Among these was an interview with German artist Thomas Demand and articles showcasing work by Scottish artist Toby Paterson and Irish artist Jesse Jones.

The redesign of the journal by Ronan Little of Little Seal was shown at the Institute of Creative Advertising & Design (ICAD) Best of Irish Advertising and Design 2010 exhibition. It also received a commendation at the 2009 Institute of Designers in Ireland (IDI) Awards. The journal was distributed nationally and internationally and the team managed its transition to the JSTOR digital library.

In 2009 the team organised a seminar and launch event for Building Material 19 at Dublin City Council’s The LAB. This included presentations by artists Dennis McNulty and Grace Weir and architect Dominic Stevens, alongside a panel discussion, moderated by architect and lecturer Brian Ward.
